Crochet Doll Sweater and Bonnet Tutorial

Let me begin by saying I have never learned how to crochet properly.
I don't know how to read a pattern and I may get the names of stitches wrong!
What I do have is a way to make a sweater and bonnet for any size doll
or stuffed animal.

This is a sweater and bonnet I made for
my 9" Patsyette doll.

Here she is looking very warm and cozy.

I start all my sweaters with a single chain that
fits the neck of the doll.

Then I go back over my chain with a single crochet.
After that I double crochet increasing slightly
(I add an extra crochet here and there) until I have
this arc that fits the shoulders of my doll.

Next I continue double crochet back again
until I reach the front of the doll's arm.

At this point I crochet a chain and reattach it making
an opening for the doll's arm.

Here is the beginning of the second arm hole.
I keep my doll near and fit the sweater as I work.

Both arm holes complete.

(Ignore my hook position in this photo)
Now I start doing 2 double crochets,
Then skip a stitch.
On the next row, I crochet into the
openings I have created.
I do this until the sweater length is right.
On larger dolls I may do 3 double crochets
to make a scallop pattern.

OK, I know, same picture.
But now I am starting the sleeve.
I begin single crochet around the arm opening.
I continue this until I reach the right arm length.

Here is the completed sleeve.
I like to do a scallop stitch to finish all my edges.

My friend Janet asked for more clarity regarding the scallop stitch
so I took some pictures .
There are 2 double crochets put into a single chain...

Then a slip stitch by itself. in the next.
This is a very basic scallop.
I hope this helps.

Here is the whole sweater.
I added the collar first then a scallop stitch all around.

My scallop on this small sweater is 2 double crochets in one stitch.
Then a basic crochet in the next stitch and repeat.

OK! Now I'll show you how I make a doll bonnet.

This is the bonnet I will be making.

I chain a length, cheek to cheek,
just above the doll's cheek line.

Then I crochet a rectangle shape from
my starting chain length.

I fold the rectangle over and close one side
with a basic chain stitch.
I flip my bonnet so the stitch is inside.

You should end up with this.

Next I scallop stitch around all the edges.

For the string I cut 3 long lengths of yarn.

Then I separate them into pairs like this.

I braid my yarn pairs into the chin tie.

I tie a knot and leave a tassel.

Last, I make a tassel on the top.
VOILA! Super easy doll bonnet.

Here are some of my dolls
wearing sweaters sets I made.

This bonnet I closed flat across the back to make
two ear points.

I hope you enjoyed my sweater and bonnet tutorial.
It is so much fun making cute clothes for dolls.

Your sweaters and bonnets are lovely.

I don't think there is a right way or a wrong way. I think there is just a "get it done" way.

I think the only question to ask is "are the dollies happy?" Clearly they are because they all look adorable.

Thank you Dorothy! Yes, the dollies are very happy and warm. I think my sweaters are pretty simple and the nice thing is I can make any size sweater using the same basic pattern.

Thank you Sandra! I love photographing and sharing my doll projects. The background is a "I haven't got my decorations out yet what can I do with these few items?" background. HAHA! I think it worked out great since my doll's sweaters were pink and blue. I'm so pleasewd you enjoy my blog and my dolls. :)

Hello Brenda,

I think your "instructions" are fine, as clear as can be, especially since I knit but don't know how to crochet. Well, i know a few stitches but I cannot follow a pattern. My crocheting is a lot like yours only not as nice - I just do soe, try it on the doll, and if it fits, I continue. if it doesn't fit I rip it back and start over. Eventually, my doll gets something new .

But i don't know how to do the scallops at the edge, can you explain that, and maybe show a picture - in your next blog would be fine. I'd like to add that look to some of my work. It really is lovely.

Hi Janet! Thanks for your encouraging comments. Most everything I do is the same. I just forge ahead and see what happens, haha! I did figure out this system for making doll sweaters accidentally. My Mom, who is a great crocheter, was trying to help me follow a pattern for a crocheted doll dress. I wound up making a sweater instead.

The scallop stitch is really just 2 or 3 big stitches (double crochet) and then a single pull through loop. I am adding an image to this blog that shows more clearly what I did. For larger projects you can add more double crochets to make the scallop larger.

Brenda you did an excellent job on the sweater sets. I do the same with knitting. Never can I follow patterns or instructions.
Thank You for sharing.

Wonderful instructions! I have been hunting for free crochet patterns for a sweater for my American Girl doll. This just might work for me. Thanks!!

How lovely the sweaters are and I love the bonnets, too. My maternal grandmother crocheted a set when my mother was carrying us. No one knew my mother was having twins. My grandmother had to crochet another set for me ,since I was the last twin born. She did it in one night. Those sweater sets are now on our dolls we have kept from childhood.

Thank you Marion! I am glad to know I am not alone. My Mom tried to teach me how to read a patter to no avail! I have managed to muddle my way through lots of little projects though.

Merry Christmas Marion!

Thank you Joan! I do enjoy my dolls. Maybe it's silly, but I hate for them to look cold. So, that's what motivated me to figure out my sweater design. No cold dollies. :)

Thank you Lil Red Hen, I think it should work fine. I just add more rows for the larger dolls and increase more often to create the first couple rows from the neck. I also add double crochets at the shoulder when making the sleeve, just on top, to give it a downward curve.

Remind me please, you are Charlotte, right?

Hello Brenda,

Thank you for demonstrating the edging. I am going to give this a try - I have some dolls who do not have sweaters or hats !

I love all you little Christmas trees too - those pink and pearly ones are darling !
