Playing House

Sally Ann can I play with you?

Oh, hello Daisy. Yes, you may,
but I am the mom, OK?
You are my little girl and must do as I say.

But I'm your sister.
You mean pretend?

Yes.
NOW, I am very busy with this
ironing.  I need you to take care of the babies.

OK babies, you must do as I say!

I'm tired of taking care of the babies.
When can we have some tea?

It's not time for tea Daisy.
I am very busy and must finish this ironing.

Just one cookie?  PU-LEASE?

Oh Daisy! Now the baby is crying!
OK, I'll tend the baby.

Oh my, I am tired.  A mother's work is very
difficult but SO important Daisy!
Yes, Sally, I mean mom.

Sally, the baby is not crying anymore.

All right, thank you Daisy. I must get back to work!
You may have one cookie now.

Yum! Thank you!
Now which one?

Daisy? Don't eat too many cookies.
You'll ruin your supper!
Daisy?

There you are.  Sweet dreams.

Sigh.  A mother's work is never done.

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!

Just a couple notes:

This China Head Doll that
appears in this post belonged to my
grandmother. She is 8" tall and
is wearing her original dress.

My grandmother, Barbara Watts Grable,
was born in 1921.
This photo was taken when she
was 10 years old in 1931.

This is the same grandmother who
gave me kleenex to iron,
who collected dolls and
taught me to sew.

Barbara and Joe Grable
around 1947.

Hi Brenda,
I enjoyed this story, it reminds me of playing as a child. Your girls are certainly busy looking after the babies and ironing. I love all your beautiful props and stunning photos.
I hope you and all other Mums have a nice Mothers Day.

Hi Anna,
Thank you and Happy Mother's Day! I had fun doing this. My grandmother had a play ironing board and iron that I LOVED playing with as a girl. Grandma would give me kleenex tissues to iron. Such sweet memories.

Hi Mary,
Thank you! I had fun creating this one. I played with a toy iron and ironing board when I was a little girl. My grandma would give me kleenex to iron. It brough back so many memories of playing pretend and everyone had to know their role!

So sweet! I have a little toy iron similar to yours. When my mom was little, she actually had a real working toy iron and her mother, my Gramma, would give her the hankies to iron on ironing day. This was an adorable story and reminds me of being a kid again. Thanks for sharing 🩷 have a good mother's day weekend!

Hi Jennifer,
I think that we played more in imitation of traditional mothering roles as children than girls do today. It makes me a little sad. I loved pretending to be hte mommy and iron and wash and bathe my dolls, until they almost had no hair left! Haha. But I loved this type of play. I'm so glad you enjoyed remembering the same memories of play I have.
Hugs
